Police on Sunday praised the well-behaved protesters, babies and 90-year-olds among them, at a climate change protest at two southern NSW coal mines.
However, 13 arrests on Sunday for trespass marred the third and final day of protests that drew several hundred people to Dendrobium mine at Mount Kembla and Metropolitan Colliery at Helensburgh.
Some of the protesters at the Dendrobium mine broke into buildings and unveiled a huge banner reading 'water not coal' before chaining themselves to conveyor belts.
About 50 people also blockaded the gates of Metropolitan Colliery, which is owned by energy firm Peabody.
It was part of Climate Camp 2009, a protest aimed at preventing the expansion of the Helensburgh mine and reducing the use of coal.
'There were some arrests but it's gone off very well, there's been a spirit of cooperation between us and the police,' one of those arrested told said on Sunday.
'At one point the police were helping a couple of the really old boys down the steps, so I think that says what sort of thing it was.'
Climate Camp spokeswoman Jess Miller said people living around Metropolitan Colliery were opposed to its expansion.
'The reality is that the expansion of polluting industries is being done recklessly and community members will not tolerate it,' she said in a statement.
Wollongong Local Area Commander Superintendent Kyle Stewart praised those attending the event, despite the arrests.
'I would like to commend the majority of protesters at Helensburgh who staged a peaceful and well natured demonstration and generally observed the directions of police,' he said in a statement.
